The trends of stationary design have definitely evolved over time. There are envelope liners, letterpress, debossing, bold colors, die cut, etc. There are also designers who create the most one of a kind designs that are anything but traditional. Envelopes have now become obsolete. They can come folded, in a tin can, in a box, or as a book.
